Kamloops this Week has released all the candidates answers for the first of four questions. I have posted the question with my full answer below since I believe in it better represents my opinion. To read the rest of the article click HERE.
Considering what the city has done thus far to address the linked issues of addiction and homelessness, what should be the next step taken by city council?
I believe we need to look at our current programs and find out how effective they are. More tax payer money is being requested to be spent on these programs even though homelessness, crime, and addiction numbers are trending upwards in Kamloops. We need to find out if what we are doing is helping and rehabilitating people or if it is enabling these behaviours and actually attracting more of these issues to Kamloops. I feel right now we are only treating the symptoms, and I believe that by providing meaningful employment and affordable housing to people of all backgrounds we can start treating the cause of these issues and prevent people from falling through the cracks in the first place. Right now I feel that we are focusing all our efforts on people at the end of the cycle, when we can be doing more to prevent people, especially young people, from ever starting the cycle.
